    Volunteers

Volunteers are at the core of our organization, and we offer many different ways to get involved. What are you interested in?

    • If you like the historic house, and you like talking to people, you might make a good tour guide!
    • If you like the historic house, but you like working alone, you might like to clean and maintain the rooms, and decorate for the holidays or events. Or help keep the collection storage rooms organized and dusted.
    • If you like Oswego history and want to help sort, inventory and list new collections, you could work in archives.
    • If you like working on a computer, there is data entry of descriptions of photos and documents in a word-searchable database and making digital scans of them.
    • If you like researching a topic and telling stories with objects, you might like to create exhibits from the collection.
    • If you like educating people, you might create special programming for different groups from children to seniors.
    • If you like being in the community as our ambassador, we look for helpers for fundraisers and events.

    Internships

We offer internship opportunities for college and graduate students interested in exploring careers in museums, as well as Oswego area high school students through select work programs.

    For SUNY Oswego Students:

We accept interns for the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. Internships are highly customized to each student. Starting with an introductory meeting, we will get to know you and your interests to create goals for the semester. After this introductory meeting, prospective interns must communicate with their academic advisor as well as the SUNY Oswego EXCEL office to set up class credit. More information on EXCEL internship requirements for students can be found here.

Example internship experiences and requirements can be found below. Please note that certain internships are only offered in specific semesters.

The Oswego County Historical Society seeks to interpret its collections to connect the community to past, present and future topics relevant to local history, and to promote a public interest in Oswego County’s historical resources.
