Description

250th Anniversary French and Indian War Commemorative Louis XV 1758 Peace Medal with Oswego NY battle named on the reverse.

1-1/2 inches in diameter, displayed in a beautiful rosewood presentation box

Regarded by some scholars as one of the “Indian peace medals,” it depicts a bust of the French king on one side with the Latin “Louis XV. Ruler of the World.” On the reverse appear the following names: “Wesel, Oswego, Port Mahon,” all important French victories in the Seven Years War (known in the Americas as the French & Indian War).  Oswego, an important position in North America, was captured by the Marquis de Montcalm, in 1756. The French Canadian peace medals were issued for presentation to the Native North Americans that supported the French military campaigns.

This is a replica of an actual Peace Medal coin that was purchased by Oswego resident Theodore Irwin in 1894 and donated by his son to the Oswego County Historical Society in 1913.
